New Zealanders deserve to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. The Honest Food Project is a Farming with Walt initiative focused on transparency, fairness and better outcomes for New Zealand farmers and consumers.
The Honest Food Project is about one simple idea: if New Zealand farmers are required to meet high standards, consumers should be able to see clearly whether imported food has been produced to the same standards or not. This is not about noise, personalities or ideology. It is about facts, fairness and honest information.
New Zealand pig farmers operate under high animal welfare and production standards. Yet imported pork can still compete in our market even when it has been produced under different rules and different expectations. That creates an uneven playing field for producers and leaves consumers without the full picture.
This matters because farmers deserve a fair go. It matters because consumers deserve honest information. And it matters because New Zealand should back a food system built on trust, transparency, and integrity. If people are going to make informed choices, they need clear and meaningful information about where food comes from and how it was produced.
We are asking for a serious look at the facts and the options. That includes whether New Zealand is using every lawful and practical tool available to improve fairness in the market. It also includes whether our food labelling rules are genuinely helping consumers understand what they are buying, or whether they need real reform.
The Honest Food Project is focused on:
The Honest Food Project is not anti-trade. It is not anti-consumer. It is not about attacking individuals or organisations. It is about raising a legitimate issue, putting the facts on the table, and working toward practical solutions that improve trust and fairness in the New Zealand food market.
We are gathering information, putting evidence in front of the public, examining the options available to New Zealand, and advocating for practical improvements. That may include stronger labelling, clearer disclosure, and a more serious examination of the rules that shape our market.
Consumers should not have to guess. Farmers should not have to compete in the dark. Honest food policy starts with honest information. When people know what they are buying, they can make informed decisions. When the system is transparent, confidence grows. That is better for consumers, better for farmers, and better for New Zealand.
If you believe New Zealanders deserve honest information about their food, follow Farming with Walt and support The Honest Food Project. Read the facts. Share the message. Help push for a fairer and more transparent food system.
The Honest Food Project is a Farming with Walt initiative and is separate from any political campaign.
